Generations Races and Annual Dinner 2003

On the 19th April some thirty former St. Anne’s rowers - finding it far too familiar returning to the Isis – gathered for the inaugural Generations races. Scouring the depths of our minds for memories of quite what you do with a blade, early parts of the afternoon were spent making a few quiet ‘private’ trips. Rest and re-couperation essential, much time was spent while waiting for boats to return catching up with those people who’ve proved elusive since graduating. With three full crews entered races were held from Tims to the ‘Exeter College Boat House red door’, in a three way round robin. Victorious were the crew of ‘96 captained by Charlotte Hunter, vowing to return next year to defend such a prestigious title! Challengers are already cadjoling and persuading organising the best crews. _With a short interlude for old times sakes in the Head of the River, most returned to college for the inaugural Annual Dinner. This was attended by the Principle, and featured drinks in the Hadrow room and dinner in the Upper Common Room. Sadly due to media commitments and GB trials a number of Olympic gold medal winners were forced into turning down our invitation to speak, and we were entertained by the current presidents of OARS (Nick Skea-Starchan) and SABC (Ed Harrison). With all adjourning to the Purple Turtle (Union Cellar Bar – as was) the evening was a fantastically enjoyable for all. Next years races and dinner will be held close to Easter – but hopefully avoiding the weekend itself, and we hope you’ll be able to join us, challenging the current holders with a crew of yourself and your St Anne’s friends. Before then though we will be holding our late-summer drinks party in London on 27th September.
